How to Write a Paragraph of An Essay for Competitive Examination?

In order to write a paragraph on any specific point in an essay, there are four rules:

  1. Start with Topic Statement (One Sentence Only)
  2. Explanation of the topic statement (One or Two Sentences)
  3. Further Discussion of the topic (Justify or Open Up or provide any Example or fact and figure)
  4. End paragraph with concluding sentence (There are two ways for writing concluding sentences: Either Restate the Topic Sentence or Link to the main topic)

How to Write Topic Statement of a Paragraph?

Topic sentence is the main idea or the point you have mentioned in the outline. So if you have written outline in a sentence form, you can simply write it as it is, else if you have written only in the form of phrase or words, then you will try to use those words to make a topic statement of an Essay.

Let Suppose, you have written outline similar to Social Media and Changing Relationships (check outline) , then you will simply write topic statement as:

Social media has deteriorated sincere and intimate relationships between individuals.

However, if you write outline in a simple format, then you will write a topic statement as:

Violation of water crisis by India is the major cause of water crisis in Pakistan.

or

Water crisis has serious effects on health sector.

or 

Educated youth are considered as an asset to every nation.

How to Explain Topic Statement of a Paragraph?

A Topic Statement of a Paragraph can be explained as:

Due to non-availability of clean water, diseases are prevailing throughout the country.

or

This is so because they promote development and growth of a nation.

or 

India has scrapped laws that grant special status to Indian-administered Kashmir amid an indefinite lockdown and massive troop deployment in the disputed region.

 

How to Discuss further about a Topic or Issue in a Paragraph?

In order to discuss or open up a topic for further discussion, you can follow few points.

If you have any example or statistics or any authentic report like (World Bank, IMF, Economic Survey of Pakistan etc.) to justify the issue, you can add in this section. However, if you do not remember any such thing, you can simply discuss the topic in a little more detail. For example:

According to the recent report of World Bank, “Only 4% of GDP of Pakistan is spend on health sector.”

Article 370 and 35a guarantees special status to Kashmir. Previously, India considered Kashmir a bilateral issue and was against any involvement of third party. But the unilateral move by India on 5th August, 2019 escalated the tension between India and Pakistan. In addition to this, both countries have changed its political map in the context of Kashmir.

How to End a Paragraph or Write a Concluding Paragraph?

In order to write a concluding paragraph, we can write something like this:

Thus, healthcare sector is seriously effected due to water crisis in the country.

or

Therefore, escalation in this context can exaggerate nuclear war between India and Pakistan.

or

This shows that global warming is the reality of 21st century.

or 

So, there is serious need of new dams in the country.

Some Basic Question Regarding Paragraph Writing

What should be an Ideal Length of a Paragraph?

Th ideal length of a paragraph should be in-between 50% to 75% of a page. However, if the length exceeds, try to limit it to one page only.

Should length of all paragraph be equal?

No, every idea or issue is different. So you length can vary. However, if you can write equal length, you can. But, it is a mandatory to have equal length of all paragraphs.

I have got the comment that my sentences are not interlinked with others. How should I connect my previous sentence with the next?

Use connector like: likewise, moreover, in addition to, on the contrary, thus, therefore and others. In this way, you will be able to interlink your sentences in a paragraph.

My mentor has marked that focus on choice of words. How can I do this?

Choice of words comes with reading. Try to read good articles and observe how to use words in a sentence or a paragraph. Many students learn new words of vocabulary and try to add in the essay. you can use them, but first learn how and where the word is suitable.

While writing a paragraph, I am repeating same words again and again and this is indicating lack of new words or vocabulary. How should I overcome with this?

Many students repeat same words, especially when they do not read any good article or piece of work before writing. They use which is, that is, this is, in the country, serious causes, allowed to, caused, remedial measures, affected, several times in a single paragraph. So, for this, you must need synonyms of words. Like if you are writing causes again and again, so just google synonym of causes, you will get something like engender, generate, originate, create, prompt, exaggerate, promote, trigger, give rise to etc. 

So, next time, when you write something, search all words, write on a piece of paper and use them while writing. This is practice and you will learn it with time.

Do I need to use difficult vocabulary words while writing a paragraph?

There is no need to write difficult words while writing a paragraph. If you can write it in simple language and correct English, you are good to go.

Basic English is the level of English required while writing a paragraph. The main focus should be on correct English rather than on fancy words.

What is the basic criteria for writing the paragraph of an Essay?

Follow the above rules, Use connectors and error free English. For this, try to revise Grammar rules from any book and read good writeups. Also, Write in such a way that even a child of 5th standard can understand what have you written.

How many difficult words can I add in a Paragraph or Sentence?

If you are using any fancy words, try to add no more than one fancy words per sentence. So that, it can be easy for the reader to understand the meaning of your written sentence.
