Introduction on Importance of Freedom of Media

More than a year after he was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi remains at the top of a list of the most serious threats to press freedom. Moreover, Daphne Caruana Galizia of MaltaEsraa Abdel Fattah of Egypt, and  Azory Gwanda of Tanzania are some of the other journalists who were tortured for reporting against elites and imprisoned over the allegation of spreading false news. These incidents show that the slogans of freedom of media are just in words and articles while in real journalists are facing unprecedented levels of fear and danger.  But what is the freedom of media in real? Why is there a need for freedom of media? How freedom of media provides a healthy democratic society? Why absolute freedom poses a serious threat to society? What are hurdles in achieving freedom of media and how freedom of media can be achieved in letter and spirit? This essay will dwell upon these questions in detail. A free press is one of the key features of a healthy democratic society. Politically, freedom of media helps in the development of leadership, assists the government in decision making, and highlights human rights violation. Economically, freedom of media analyzes government policies and assists investors in decision-making. Socially, freedom of media highlights social evils and helps in promoting multiculturalism. On the contrary, absolute freedom of media spreads chaos and fanaticism coupled with religious hatred and extremism. Though there are hurdles in achieving freedom of media. However, it can be achieved by promoting media education, and proper legislative laws regarding the protection of media authorities.
