Two students appeared at an examination. One of them secured 9 marks more than the other and his marks was 56% of the sum of their marks. The marks obtained by them are:

A. 39, 30
B. 41, 32
C. 42, 33
D. 43, 34

C. 42, 33

Let one of the students secure x marks.

then, the other student secures (x+9) marks.

the sum of both their marks is equal to

56% of the sum of both means

56% of x+x+9 (x+9 obtained 56% marks when we both students marks)

or

(56/100)* x+x+9

so,

x+9=56% of (x+x+9)

x+9=(56/100)*(2x+9)

x+9=(112x+504)/100

100(x+9)=112x+504

100x+900=112x+504

900-504=112x-100x

396=12x

396/12=x

33=x

or

x=33

so the mark of other student will be

x+9

33+9

42

Marks obtained by both students are 33 and 42.
