General Pervez Musharraf became the Army Chief of Pakistan Army in 1998. He was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) by the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in October 1998, after the retirement of General Jehangir Karamat. Musharraf went on to hold the position for almost nine years, making him one of the longest-serving Army Chiefs in Pakistan’s history. During his tenure as Army Chief, Musharraf played a key role in the 1999 Kargil conflict with India, and later staged a military coup against the elected government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999. He went on to serve as the President of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008, before being forced to resign in the face of mounting political pressure and popular protests.
