Q: Use any FIVE of the following idioms in sentences to make their meaning clear:

(i) Make for.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: That letter of yours will make for hard feelings in the family.

(ii) Yeoman’s service.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: On many occasions, his morality did him genuine yeoman’s service.

(iii) Discretion is the better part of valour.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: She decided not to voice her opposition to the Chairman’s remarks. Perhaps discretion was the better part of valour.

(iv) A casting vote.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: Speaker made his casting vote in favour of the bill.

(v) Look down upon.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: Do not look down on the poor.

(vi) Iconoclast.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: Ahmadinejad is an iconoclast leader of the Muslim world.

(vii) Out of the wood.
Meaning:
Use in sentence: It is true that the economy is getting stronger, but we are not out of the woods yet.

(viii) A swan song
Meaning:
Use in sentence: Blind girl sings her “swang song”, and at the end of her performance she is killed.
